Whether you are bringing your new puppy home for the first time or you are taking your Labrador retriever on vacation with you, you need to know how to keep your pet safe. When you transport your dog in a vehicle, it is important to make sure he is comfortable and safe for the entire riding. It isn’t safe for you or your Labrador to allow him to roam freely in the car, even if you think he will sit still for most of the ride.
Crates
Putting your Labrador retriever in a crate for the duration of the ride is the best way you can keep him safe. The crate needs to be located in the backseat or the cargo area of your vehicle. If you have an open bed truck, you will need to secure the crate so it doesn’t fall out of the bed if you must stop quickly or you get into an accident. Since you will be using a crate, it is also important that your dog is comfortable using one.
Other Options
If you would rather not use a crate in the car or you feel badly cooping your Labrador retriever up for a long car ride, you may want to consider a dog seatbelt. These belts will keep your dog secure if you get in an accident or must stop quickly without endangering him. However, this means he will be taking up an extra seat. If you have an SUV or other large vehicle, you can use a fence-like separator between the passenger area and the cargo area to restrain your dog. You may still want to tether him with a leash to help keep him safe, though.
What to Bring
When you take a car ride with your Labrador retriever, especially if it is a longer trip, you will need to bring along everything your dog needs. Make sure you bring plenty of water and a dish for your dog to drink from. If you will be driving all day, make sure you have something for your dog to eat as well. A leash and bags to use to pick up after your dog are essential to your trip. You may even want to provide your Labrador with a chew toy so he doesn’t become bored on the long drive.
Stops are Important
As you drive, it is important to take frequent rest stops with your dog. Some people can go long periods of time in a vehicle without stopping to use the restroom. While some Labrador retrievers can do the same, it is best to give your pet plenty of exercise and a chance to relieve himself if he needs to. This will help break up the trip and make things easier for your dog.
Making your car trip more comfortable for your dog should be one of your biggest priorities. When you are planning your vacation, you know you will need to find places to stay that allow you to bring your dog with you, but you may not realize what traveling in the car entails for your dog. Make sure you properly restrain your dog, carry the proper items for your Labrador retriever and stop often. If you do this, your dog will enjoy his trip just as much as you will.
