There are two types of Labrador retrievers you can find from AKC breeders: the English Labrador and the American Labrador. While they are both Labs, there are distinct differences in their body type, as well as the personalities. Understanding the difference will help you choose the right breed for your family.

American Labrador

American vs English Lab
Learn the difference between the American an English Lab to choose the right dog for you.

The American Lab is known as a field dog. They are typically heavier than the English Lab, weighing on average between 60-90 pounds. The American Lab is characterized as having longer legs, which are good for running and hunting in the fields. They are also known as having a defined bone structure, longer head and long, skinny tail. The personality of the American Lab is one of the most important things to be aware of if you are looking for a “house” dog. Because of its innate nature to be athletic or hunt, the American Lab is hyper. If you are looking for a dog that will be by your side and calm all day long, the American Lab is not the choice for you. If you are looking for a dog you can play with all the time, take on hikes and various other exercises or hunting, the American Lab is the choice for you.

English Labrador

The English Labrador is the breed most everyone is familiar with and the one you see in dog shows. The differences in this breed include a thicker bone frame, which gives them a stockier build, square head and a thick tail. The personality differences shine through as well. The English Lab is much less hyper and is eager to please. Training an English Lab is much easier because of its calmer demeanor. It also makes a great family dog.

The English Labrador vs American Labrador is a debate almost everyone goes through when they are looking to add a lovable Lab to their family. Both types of Labs are a great choice; the circumstances surrounding your lifestyle are what will help you determine which breed would fit best in your dynamic.
