As with any relationship, your relationship with your Labrador works two ways. While dogs are a man’s best friend, it is important to show your dog you do love him and care about his well-being; a true relationship doesn’t just happen naturally. When you show your dog just how much you care in ways dogs can understand, your Lab will thank you 100 times over. Labrador retrievers are one of the most loyal, friendly and outgoing dogs when you treat them right. It is not hard to do; it just takes a few simple steps.

Devote Plenty of Time – All Labrador retrievers love attention. They literally thrive on it. Without attention, Labs become depressed and lethargic. This means for you to have a Lab that is happy, healthy and friendly, you need to take time each day to play with him. It does not take expensive toys with all the bells and whistles. All it takes is a ball or Frisbee and a little time from you to keep your dog’s tail wagging all day long.
Exercise – Labradors need a lot of room to run. If you do not have the room in your own backyard, most towns have dedicated dog parks that are completely fenced in. This allows you to let your dog off the leash and let him run as much as possible. As an
added benefit, he will also enjoy socializing with other dogs and people, which is key to a happy, friendly Lab.
Discipline – Just like children, the Labrador thrives on discipline. Labs are energetic and outgoing, which gives them the means to consistently test their boundaries. When you are firm with your boundaries and your gentle discipline, your dog will be rewarded with safety and happiness in his own home.
